Agra from Delhi: A Weekend Plan Around the Taj Mahal

Getting to Agra, the Friday closure, sunrise versus sunset, and what else to see — Agra Fort, Mehtab Bagh and the “Baby Taj”.

Agra is the classic short trip from Delhi, and for good reason: the Taj Mahal really does live up to its reputation. The trick is timing — which day, which hour and which gate — so you spend your time looking at marble rather than standing in queues.

Getting there

The Yamuna Expressway makes the drive around 230 km and three and a half to four hours in normal traffic. Trains are faster and less tiring: several services run between Delhi and Agra Cantt in about two hours. Leaving Delhi very early lets you reach the Taj at opening time as a day trip, though staying one night makes the visit much calmer.

The Taj Mahal: timing is everything

  • The Taj is closed on Fridays for general visitors. Plan around this before anything else.
  • It opens 30 minutes before sunrise and closes 30 minutes before sunset. Sunrise brings thinner crowds and soft light; in December and January, fog can hide the dome entirely.
  • Book online through the official ASI channels to save a little money and skip the ticket queue. Add the ₹200 main mausoleum ticket if you want to see the cenotaphs and the inlay work up close.
  • Enter through the East or West gate; the South gate is used as an exit. Food, tobacco and large bags are not allowed, so travel light.

Beyond the Taj

  • Agra Fort — the red sandstone fort where Shah Jahan spent his last years, with views of the Taj along the river.
  • Mehtab Bagh — a garden across the Yamuna directly opposite the Taj; the best place for a sunset view without the crowds.
  • Itimad-ud-Daulah’s tomb — often called the “Baby Taj”, a small, exquisitely inlaid tomb that predates the Taj Mahal.
  • Fatehpur Sikri — Akbar’s abandoned capital, about 40 km away, if you have a second day.

A simple two-day plan

Day one: arrive by afternoon, visit Agra Fort, and watch sunset from Mehtab Bagh. Day two: be at the Taj gate before opening, spend two to three hours there, then visit Itimad-ud-Daulah’s tomb or head to Fatehpur Sikri on the way back to Delhi.

Good to know

Hire guides only from official counters and agree a price first. Carry ID for Indian-rate tickets. Shoe covers are provided for the mausoleum platform. Avoid visiting at midday in summer, when the white marble becomes blindingly bright and hot underfoot.
